How we work and why?
Connecting the past with the present through dialogue
Our mission
The mission of the Danish Welfare Museum is to preserve cultural heritage and create social history about, with, and for former placed-out or socially vulnerable citizens.
We work in strategic partnerships, conduct interdisciplinary research, and carry out outreach activities to collaborate with those whose stories are seldom told.
Through a museum activist approach, we connect past experiences with the present.
Space for dialogue
At the Danish Welfare Museum, we believe that we can counteract prejudice and stigmatization by providing insight into life on the fringes of society.
We believe it’s important to create a forum where former placed-out or socially vulnerable citizens can contribute to Danish poor relief history while strengthening their citizenship and personal agency.
We also believe that by discussing social history, welfare, and social policy on a historically anchored basis, we can create understanding, engage our visitors, and strengthen their democratic participation.
We are dedicated to acting socially responsibly in our research, education, and outreach, and we see interdisciplinary and personal diversity as strengths.
We believe that museums can create spaces for dialogue and inspire social change.
